Data for Policy CIC celebrates its 10th anniversary, marking a decade of leadership in promoting global dialogue on the transformative role of data, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies in governance and policymaking. Since our inception in 2014, and with the inaugural conference held in 2015 at the University of Cambridge, we have grown into a dynamic and mature community, dedicated to bridging the gap between technological innovation and effective policymaking for the public good.
A Global Platform for Thought Leadership
What began as a pioneering discussion on Policymaking in the Big Data Era has since expanded into a global network of academics, policymakers, and industry experts. The annual Data for Policy conference quickly became a key platform, sparking rich debates on topics ranging from the ethical use of AI in public sector decision-making to building digital trust. Our second conference in 2016, Exploring the Frontiers of Data Science for Government, continued to establish this global dialogue, drawing interest from governments, leading scholars, and industry professionals.
In 2019, we reached a major milestone with the launch of the Data & Policy Journal, in partnership with Cambridge University Press. The journal has served as a bridge between academia and practice, offering peer-reviewed research at the intersection of data science and policy. Today, it is a leading resource for policymakers and practitioners alike, promoting a deeper understanding of data’s impact on society.
Expanding Global Reach
Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, our 2020 and 2021 conferences were held virtually, enabling us to connect a global audience. These online events highlighted the critical role of data and AI in navigating the crisis and underscored the resilience of our community.
In 2022, Data for Policy took a strategic step by holding regional conferences in Hong Kong, Seattle, and Brussels. This move allowed us to engage with local experts and address regional challenges while maintaining our global focus. That same year, we launched the Data for Policy Equity Initiative with philanthropic support from the Gates Foundation, increasing participation from Africa and the Global South and amplifying voices from underrepresented regions. These initiatives have been instrumental in ensuring more diverse perspectives are integrated into the global conversation.
Trustworthy Governance with AI ?
In 2024, our eighth international conference was held at Imperial College London, centered on the theme of Trustworthy Governance with AI. With over 130 presenters, the event brought together key voices to discuss AI’s transformative potential, ethical concerns, and the critical need for public accountability in AI-driven systems. Throughout this journey, we have remained committed to leading the conversation on how technology can be harnessed to serve the public good and shape a future where data and AI work in the interests of all.
