Data for Policy 2025 Conference – Europe Edition: Call for Special Tracks

Leiden University, The Hague, The Netherlands, 12th & 13th June 2025

We are thrilled to announce the Data for Policy 2025 Conference – Europe Edition, to be held in The Hague, Netherlands, on 12 – 13 June, 2025, in collaboration with Leiden University. This conference will bring together researchers, policymakers, practitioners, and industry experts to explore the transformative power of data and AI in driving sustainability and inclusion. Together, we aim to advance actionable insights that support critical decision-making, foster inclusivity, and address sustainability goals.

Data for Policy envisions a future where data-driven technologies shape a more equitable and informed world. At the forefront of this vision is the concept of twin transitions—digital and green transformations—that form the heart of the 2025 conference theme, “Twin Transitions in Data and Policy for a Sustainable and Inclusive Future”. This theme emphasizes how data-driven strategies can address complex issues like environmental impact and social equity. As we face global challenges, the scientific and policy communities are raising key questions about aligning digital innovation with sustainability goals and exploring the mutual reinforcement between digital and green transitions. With a focus on sustainable, inclusive growth, the theme captures the potential of data and AI to advance critical global sustainability objectives.

The first phase of the call for contributions is now open, warmly inviting special track proposals. Local conference chairs, Sarah Giest, Professor of Public Policy at Leiden University, and Bram Klievink, Professor of Public Administration at Leiden University, welcome proposals that align with either the main conference theme, “Twin Transitions in Data and Policy for a Sustainable and Inclusive Future,” or the broader theme of Data for Policy.

We encourage proposers to reflect on challenges and opportunities specific to their regions, while maintaining alignment with the central conference theme. The conference is an opportunity to discuss global issues, but we are open to contributions that explore regional nuances or challenges.

For detailed information about the special track submission and post-acceptance process, please visit the Submission & Guidelines page.

Join us at Leiden University, The Hague, as we explore data’s pivotal role in advancing sustainable and inclusive futures.

We look forward to receiving your track proposals and to the insightful discussions that will shape the future of data and policy.

Data for Policy 2025 European Conference Theme

Amidst global challenges, the “twin transition”—encompassing digital and green transformations—has garnered significant attention for its potential to reshape industrial ecosystems and influence social inequalities. However, in the scientific community and policy arena questions have been raised on whether green and digital transitions are mutually compatible or whether one transition can reduce or cancel out the other. Furthermore, we see sustainability as an integrative perspective that includes  environmental, social, economical and institutional sustainability. Both public and private sectors are increasingly aligning their objectives towards digital innovation and sustainable practices. Governments are developing policies to guide these transitions, ensuring that technological advancements account for sustainability. Concurrently, substantial investments are being funneled into industries poised to drive this twin transition. Data lies at the heart of this transformation, empowering  policymakers to monitor progress in real-time, identify emerging trends, and design impactful and targeted strategies. From driving down carbon emissions to closing the digital divide, data-driven insights offer the actionable intelligence needed to tackle complex challenges and pave the way toward a more equitable, sustainable future. At this nexus, the theme of the European Data for Policy Conference is Twin transitions in data and policy for a sustainable and inclusive future”
