As we conclude 2024, Data for Policy CIC remains at the forefront of advancing critical discussions on AI, data governance, and the ethical implications of emerging technologies. This year has been one of significant progress and collaboration, and as we look ahead, we continue to work towards shaping a more sustainable and inclusive future for data-driven policymaking. In this final newsletter of the year, we are pleased to share key updates and achievements that underscore our commitment to fostering impactful dialogues and contributing to the global conversation on AI and policy.

Community Member Highlights: Here are the latest updates from our community members, highlighting their contributions to the fields of data governance, AI, and policy.

On Our Radar : Key developments in AI and data governance include the publication of the General-Purpose AI Code of Practice to guide responsible AI development, the UK’s AI and Copyright Consultation, and the launch of several initiatives to enhance AI safety, including the International Network of AI Safety Institutes and the U.S. AI Safety Institute taskforce. Notable regulatory actions include the EU’s new Product Liability Directive and Spain’s draft Royal Decree on AI model development. Other updates include the U.S. strengthening export controls on semiconductors, new privacy laws in Australia, and collaboration between the UK, Qatar, and Singapore on AI safety and innovation.

 

Reports in Focus: Recent reports focus on key developments in AI and online safety. The UK government outlines online safety priorities and its role in AI development, while NASSCOM provides guidelines for responsible AI in India. Deloitte emphasizes trust in AI, and the OECD explores AI risks and policy needs. The European Commission released a charter on research access, and the OECD/IDB report highlights digital government initiatives in Latin America. Ai@cam discusses data access for AI research, and UNESCO covers synthetic content’s impact on AI policy.
