As we look back on 2024, we are proud of the remarkable progress our community has made in advancing the intersection of data science, AI, and public policy.
This year, we hosted the 8th Data for Policy International Conference, where over 130 presenters shared insights on key issues including data governance, AI regulation, and emerging technologies. The conference theme “Decoding to Future: Trustworthy Governance with AI?” underscored the importance of building ethical, transparent systems to guide AI deployment.
We are delighted to announce that the Data for Policy 2024 Conference Proceedings have been published as part of a special collection in our open-access, peer-reviewed Data & Policy Journal, in partnership with Cambridge University Press. This collection reflects the cutting-edge research presented at the conference and is now available for you to explore. Access the special collection here.
2024 marked a major milestone as we celebrated the 10th anniversary of Data for Policy CIC. Over the past decade, we have grown into a global platform driving dialogue on the impact of data and AI in policymaking. This year, we honoured our community’s journey and achievements—watch our special 10th-anniversary video here.
We also take pride in the success of our Data for Policy SSA Engagement Programme, supported by the Gates Foundation, which has significantly enhanced Sub-Saharan Africa’s participation in our network. Focused on critical areas such as healthcare, agriculture, women’s empowerment, and financial inclusion, the programme has fostered meaningful North-South collaboration and opened new avenues for impactful partnerships. This year, 16 new Area Editors have joined the Data for Policy community, bringing valuable expertise to our six key focus areas, including Digital & Data-Driven Transformations in Governance, Policy & Literacy for Data, and Algorithmic Governance. Additionally, the inaugural Translational Committee for the Data & Policy Journal and Data for Policy Conferences has been established to bridge the gap between research and practical policy applications. These new appointments will enhance collaboration and ensure our discussions continue to drive impactful, inclusive data policies. To meet our new Editorial Committee members, please click here.
In 2024, we launched the Fireside Chat Series, creating a space for our global community of academics, policymakers, industry leaders, and researchers to connect, share, and discuss pressing topics such as AI ethics, data governance, and application of new technologies. These informal yet impactful conversations have strengthened our community and inspired new ideas. Watch our recent Fireside Chats here.
Looking ahead to 2025, the Data for Policy 2025 Conference will expand its global reach by taking place across multiple locations, fostering inclusive and worldwide dialogue. The details for the Call for Abstracts, Full papers, and Panel submissions for the Data for Policy 2025 – Europe Edition can be found here, with announcements for additional editions to be made in early 2025.
The focus will remain on exploring new innovations and addressing the most pressing challenges in AI and data-driven policymaking.
As we close out 2024, we wish you a joyful Christmas and a New Year filled with peace, prosperity, and meaningful collaboration. May this festive season offer time for rest, reflection, and renewed inspiration as we look ahead to shaping a better, data-driven future together.
Warmest regards,
The Data for Policy CIC Team
